Part 1 - Asthma

Programme

15 February 2021

This session will analyse the issues and common errors associated with inhaler use and will evaluate the evidence base in relation to inhaler technique. Participants will explore practical solutions to a range of typical scenarios in primary care.

In this workshop participants will have the opportunity to examine a variety of inhaler devices and spacers to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between them. This deeper level of understanding will then be applied to practice through case-based problem solving.

When you’re regularly breathless and wheezy, it changes how you feel about yourself. It changes what you think you can do. And maybe you never tell anyone how anxious you are, because you don’t want to be a bother. Maybe you limit yourself and miss out. And sleeping? We’re wide eyed and fretful. I’m talking about my own childhood and adulthood as an asthmatic.

If you have asthma, or your child does, or you regularly care for people with it, the journey may be different and delegates are invited to add in your own thoughts. We don’t talk about feelings much, because after all...it’s only a bit of asthma. Really? I nearly died.

In a system where social prescribing is the New Statin - to be used wherever possible, where does it fit into asthma care? What does social prescribing look like for adults and children with asthma and for those who might love them? And what’s the role of the primary care nurse? Let’s chat about it. Oh, and we might sing and tell stories too.

1:10 PM -
2:10 PM

An interactive quiz will be used to guide participants through the diagnosis of asthma. Discussion topics included will focus on what do current guidelines advise, how do they conflict and why? And the new QOF requirements and what these mean for practice.

Should we use spirometry to diagnose asthma? Should we reverse normal lung function? What is the purpose of reversibility and why such a difference in the guidance? Is there a more pragmatic solution? All these questions and more answered in this session.
